Paysages de ciel, de mer, de terre, telle est la nouvelle série de paysages d’Agathe Bouton. La mer qui oscille entre marée basse et marée haute, laissant son empreinte sur le sol. Traces du temps qui passe, reflets argentés du sel qui brille sur le sable.

Des îlots qui grandissent, rétrécissent et parfois disparaissent entièrement. L’horizon flou, qui bouge, qui monte vers le ciel, ou plonge dans l’océan.

Agathe Bouton ne joue pas avec la lumière de plein jour quand le soleil est trop chaud, trop fort ou tout est trop clair. Elle aime la lumière nuancée.

Une lumière changeante, parfois lumière du point du jour mais aussi celle de la nuit qui tombe. Un crépuscule bleuté qui nous invite au recueillement et à la quiétude.

La trame de ces paysages a des notes de sépia comme de vielles photographies. Référence a un travail antérieur d’Agathe, gravures monochrome de bord de mer.

Cette serie est inspirée de la région du Sine Saloum, plus particulièrement les alentours de Palmerin au Sénégal. Langue de terre aride en saison sèche, grenier à sel de la région, qui l’hivernage venu reverdit avec les pluies, entre marigots et bolongs.

Landscapes. Seascapes. Skyscapes. Agathe Bouton’s latest series includes all these. In particular that landscape that is sometimes sea, as the water comes and goes – leaving traces, the passage of time and nature. Small islands that grow, shrink, sometimes disappear entirely.

A horizon that is shifting, unclear, moving, rising into the sky or sinking into the sea. The reflection of salt left sparkling like silver on the sand.

The light is also shifting – it is the light of the early morning or of the end of the day, the gloaming. This is not the light of the full day when the sun is too hot, too bright, and everything is too clear. It is a nuanced light that interplays with the landscape to change how it appears, even its colour.

The colours include a sepia tone – providing echoes of old photographs, and Agathe’s earlier works of monochrome engravings of similar scenes.

Although this series was inspired by the region of Sine Saloum in Senegal, we can also find in it other places that have inspired Agathe – the coast of Southern Ireland for example.

Each work is unique and involves a mixture of techniques. But in each we find the tranquillity, beauty and depth of nature, and the passing of time.
